As for a tutorial, it worked super well, not feeling too hand holdy, but also manageable. Some of the quality of life improvements (especially the map system) save so much time and allow you to have really thematic map shapes not possible in the original that I would want to see that in future releases. While I do miss the retirement & lineage systems and sandbox nature of the original, the experienced Gloomers in our group are having a blast. I think that out of context of the original, this would be heralded as an extremely tight, strategic tactical dungeon crawler, and the only reason it might feel like a "lesser" experience is in comparison to the sheer breadth of content of the original. Love it, it's an extremely polished package that feels densely packed and kind of the ideal way of getting into Gloomhaven. Fewer branching paths in story / campaign progression Hugely condensed amount of unlockable content The “Bad” (mainly tradeoffs for a more accessible game) Once you are past the tutorial, (and even the last 2 or so missions of it) it's every bit as challenging as the original. The new map system using the scenario book + supplemental scenario book is so smooth, I never want to go back to tiles. New characters feel equally if not more thematically and strategically dynamic that the original GH starting characters, and have full level progression & perk depth you expect. Extremely polished tutorial that captures the spirit of the game, moves quick enough that it shouldn't be bothersome for experienced players (first two games should take <30 minutes each), and doles out progressively more cool stuff as you play. But, some of you hate video, and others just aren't in a spot to watch (I get it, it's late and your partner doesn't want to hear me blab on about your obsession while he/she/they try to get some sleep), so here's a quick TL DW.Ġ1:00 - My "gloomhaven" perspective going into this gameĠ6:09 - What stands this apart from Gloomhaven proper?Ġ7:41 - Compatibility between JotL and original Gloomhaven Hey everyone! I was lucky enough to get a review copy of Jaws of the Lion for review and thought I'd share here with anyone interested.
